The potato is king among the Norwegian foods served in Norway. Meat cakes are second followed by lamb and cabbage. Cod brings up the rear. Most families stick to special Christmas dinner traditions. Along the coast the main dish at home on Christmas Eve is often fresh cod, halibut or lutefisk; while in eastern Norway many prefer pork ribs with pork sausage patties and Christmas sausages. Dried mutton ribs are a west coast specialty. Rice cream with red fruit sauce is served for their Christmas dinner dessert.

Livestock and grain have always been the staples of Norwegian farms. Their diet is still marked by their products of milk, butter, cheese, meat and bread. They have plenty of fish from their long coast line. The combination of fishing and farming is common along the coast.

Salted and pickled herring are used in many of the tasty dishes which make up the Norwegian cold table along with open faced sandwiches. You will often find pickled herring, or in tomato sauce or mustard sauce, on their breakfast tables. Old world recipes can be found on The Sons of Norway Web Site.

Norwegian music on CD or Casette

Music of Scandinavia CDWe carry Norwegian music in CD and Casette format, most in English, some in Norwegian by little known artists playing Hardanger Fiddle, accordion and harmonica. Some are one of a kind, some are out of print. There are some from popular modern artists like Sissel Kyrkjebo. We also have traditional Christmas songs.

Norwegian music made its first major step forward around the 1800s. In 1814 Norway and Sweden entered into a union. The Swedish royal family lived intermittently in Norway's new capital, Oslo. When the royal court was in Norway musical life flourished, and visiting musicians played an important role. It was in these circles that the first musical talent became evident.

Ole Bull (1810-1880) was probably the musician who most clearly influenced developments in the mid 1880s. "The Nordic Paganini", as he was called, laid Europe at his feet. Bull became a model for Norwegian music, and writers such as Greig, Nordraak, Bjornson, Vinje, and Ibsen.

Ole Bull's promotion of the Hardanger Fiddle is his gift to Norwegian music. We have well over one hundred CDs in stock.

Culture of Norway Information

We offer you a window to look at the culture of Norway by shopping on line. Search our collection of road maps, CDs, VHSs and DVDs plus you will find imported Scandinavian foods from Norway, Denmark and Sweden.

In 872 AD Norway was united into one kingdom when Harfagre defeated his last rivals. Around 1250, under king Hakonson, the kingdom of Norway included Greenland, the Faero Islands and the Orkneys. The Black Death killed half of Norway's population in 1349 after which the nation fell into decline coming under Danish domination, which lasted 400 years. After the Napoleonic wars Denmark lost Norway to Sweden in 1814, which lasted to 1905, when Norway became a sovereign state.

The Gulf Stream makes the climate in Norway much milder than that of countries else where at the same latitude.

The Norwegian Constitution was the work of a constitutional assembly at Eidsvoll in 1814. It was finally approved by this same assembly on May 17th of that year. Norway is a constitutional monarchy; the power is through elected government. Ole Bull (1810-1880) was the musician that influenced the culture of Norway in the mid 1880.

The sea, the forests and the waterfalls make up the basis on which Norwegian industrial life is built. Fish was Norway's first big export product. Norway is blessed with cheap electricity and is one of the largest producers of aluminum. In the 1960s the sea gave Norway another gift, oil. Other important exports are computer technology, furniture, fertilizer and cement.
